Liner Notes

In the age of mp3 downloading and compilation CD’s, one thing that is being phased out is the thick booklet filled with liner notes about individual songs or a band’s time recording the music. I used to love to sit and read all a group would share when I bought a CD. So below is the Mantlepiece liner notes that are missing from our CD and mp3 releases. Each song has a meaning and a story. We hope you enjoy learning more about the songs you have heard.

All in Your Head: ©2003 broad/little                               Appears on: SV2003 & For A Moment
Sometimes you need to get over your doubt, or you could miss out on life.
- Kevin started this song before this project was up and running. It was one of the first demos
I received from him and was a fun piece to create. Every instrument added made the song feel
whole and when we realized we had created a pop/rock tune, I ask Mackenzie Crain to help
finish the piece. She even had a part in the production and mixing of the piece.
I also had the pleasure of working with Ben Howe on this piece. Glissandos anyone?
The original 2003 release did not feature Jody on lead guitar.
Can you believe we already have a "rarity" after our first release!
Trevon Broad: Backing vocals
Kevin Little: Acoustic & Electric Guitars
Jody Lundell: Lead Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Soumen Talukder: Drums
Ben Howe: Organ
Mackenzie Crain: Lead Vocals

Circle of Rain (instr): ©2005 little                         Appears on: For A Moment
There is clam before the storm, but also feel the peace once sadness has passed.
- This song is an instrumental build to the "Morning Rain Theme" at the end. Kevin, Wade
and Jody's parts are all very cool and lets all three of them really show off their guitar talents.
Trevon Broad: Organ, Percussion
Kevin Little: Lead and Rhythm Guitars
Jody Lundell: Electric Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Soumen Talukder: Drums
Chris Hunt: Percussion
Rob Ross: Percussion

Sean Kelly from the group The Samples wrote a great song called "Anymore" where he says
all the things you wish you meant when a relationship ends. This song is my attempt at that
only with the "hope" of a better day attached. True friends will always leave a path for you to follow
just in case you need them.
-I have only written three songs on my own that have seen a release. This is number three.
And just like the first two, Jody and I recorded this one from the ground up, which we had not had
the opportunity to do in many years. I also added Sandy Broad on organ for this piece.
She is a musician that plays piano every day and organ every Sunday, but she had never appeared
on any of my recordings until this piece. I am not sure why since I have known her my whole life.
Lexi also let me borrow her awesome voice for backing vocals.
Her voice is the sexy one that is not mine.
Trevon Broad: Vocals, Organ Solo
Kevin Little: Electric Guitar
Jody Lundell: Lead & Rhythm Guitars
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Chris Hunt: Drums
Sandy Broad: Organ
Lexi Street: Backing Vocals

For a Moment: ©2004 broad/little                              Appears on: SV2004 & For A Moment
Life is lived in Moments, and some of the greatest ones can be danced in forever.
-Kevin formed this song after I sent him some of the worst/cheesiest lyrics I had ever written!
I think he easily saw the story I waned to tell and created one of the most powerful songs
that he and I have ever created. Not only did he capture the idea behind the story, but he also
captured the spirit of the whole project. Lauren Sellers delivers it to you with her golden tones.
Remember those cheesy words? The ones that were never cut do not sound cheesy
when Lauren sings them!
Trevon Broad: Backing Vocals, Melodica, Mandolin
Kevin Little: Acoustic and Rhythm Guitars
Jody Lundell: Acoustic Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Chris Hunt: Drums
Lauren Sellers: Lead Vocals

The things that are beside you are often as great as your dreams.
Make sure you keep your heart, and your mind!, open to all people who surround your life.
- I look at this piece as part three in the Morning Rain Trilogy ("Circle of Rain" being number two).
It starts out with the same basic chord progression and has some more great deep/dark lyrics.
But this piece not only leaves the trilogy with a uplifting and hopeful feeling but also helps
to finalizes the whole CD. This piece also provides the listener with a feel for how we worked
as a group towards this first release. Kevin wrote the music and we both wrote the lyrics.
Jody and Kevin both shared lead guitar parts on this song and it is the only recording on the
first release to feature Jody, Wade and myself on vocals.
Trevon Broad: Vocals (chorus), Organ
Kevin Little: Acoustic & Electric Guitars
Jody Lundell: Vocals (verses), Guitars
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar, Backing vocals
Chris Hunt: Drums
And
Lauren Sellers: Lead Vocals (on SV2005 release)

Let You Go: ©2004 broad/little                                Appears on: SV2004 & For A Moment
Sometimes you try to let go of the great moments that make your heart ache.
However, it does not work that way.
- Kevin wrote a tune called "I Know I Will" after a trip to the beach one summer.
He had created a foundation that I loved, so I just reworked the lyrics.
At a recording session with Soumen and Kevin, I asked them to speed up the tempo.
We all loved the faster feel but the melody and the lyrics were no longer a good fit with the song.
Wade, Chris and I finished off the instruments for the recording even without words because it is
a fun tune to play. After a year of the piece sitting on the shelf, I returned from a trip to a different
beach and wrote the new words and melody. A few days later, I heard Lauren Sellers sing for the
first time and by the end of that week, I had asked her to sing this new song.
Trevon Broad: Organ, Melodica, Accordion
Kevin Little: Acoustic & Electric Guitars
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Chris Hunt: Percussion
Soumen Talukder: Drums
Lauren Sellers: Lead Vocals

Matters Most: ©2005 broad/little/lundell                        Appears on: SV2005, For A Moment
Friends not only have the power to pick you up, but they can also act as your legs
if you need them to. Friendships from the past can easily hurt the heart in the present.
- This is the first song I ever wrote on guitar (I usually start on piano or bass).
It came out like a "campfire song." Kevin changed some chords, witched forced me
to be more melodic (thanks!) Then Jody played it in the Irish-folk style that has made
it everyone's favorite song. So BIG thanks to him as well as Chris Hunt for proving
to me that you can make a drum set sound like three percussionists.
And thanks to Reiner Musir for his fantastic moving bass line.
Trevon Broad: Vocals (verses), Melodica, Mandolin
Jody Lundell: Vocals (chorus), Guitars
And
Chris Hunt: Drums & Percussion
Reiner Musir: Double Bass

Morning Rain: ©2005 broad/little                                  Appears on: For A Moment
Tomorrow will be another day, and most of the time it is people who can help you mend.
- This was one of the first songs written for this project. Kevin wanted to write lyrics that
captured the darkness of the deepest despair - but then turn right around and tell you
of the hope that waits after the pain is gone. This song moves seamlessly between four
different sections and was one of our first pieces to do so. It is a longer piece but leaves
you up in guitar heaven after that last "Morning Rain Theme." Also, a big thanks to
Soumen Talukder for all of his time and work on this first release.
Trevon Broad: Vocals, Bass Guitar, Organ
Kevin Little: Acoustic & Electric Guitars
Jody Lundell: Backing Vocals, Lead Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Soumen Talukder: Drums

Oceans Turn the Moon: ©2003 broad/little/summerlin
Appears on: Paths Less Traveled, SV2003 & For A Moment
Everyone knows the moon's effect on the tides; but no one ever thinks about how the tides
may affect the moon. People and relationships can be like that too.
- This piece started as an experimental percussion piece. (Be thankful none of those tracks
made the release!) I sent it to Kevin and he heard something more. Kevin created structure
over my notes and rhythm and in turn, the words fell out of the pen. With Wade's help and
talent, we were able to finish the song for Genterine Records for the "Paths Less Traveled"
release. I also had the pleasure of working with the greatest flute player I know, Jenny Broad.
If I can track her down, she could very easily appear on more releases.
"Oceans Turn the Moon" was the first song released under the Mantlepiece name.
Trevon Broad: Vocals, Cello
Kevin Little: Acoustic & Electric Guitars
Wade Summerlin: Lead & Bass Guitars
And
Soumen Talukder: Drums
Jenny Broad: Flute

The Story: ©2005 broad/little/ross                                Appears on: For A Moment
Sometimes memories are too great not to share with the world.
I am grateful to share these moments through music.
- I started playing the opening riff one day and Rob Ross picked up his guitar and started
playing along. I went out to pick up some lunch and when I returned he had taken it much
further. We wrote some words and sent a version to Kevin. Kevin turned around with a
better-packaged song with the addition of that cool first line! Wade and Jody added there
two cents (apiece) and Lexi added her vocals (which cause the world to stop every time
she sings her two lines, which is an amazing trick!)
Trevon Broad: Vocals, Organ, cello
Kevin Little: Rhythm Guitars
Jody Lundell: Acoustic & Lead Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Chris Hunt: Drums
Reiner Musir: Double Bass
Rob Ross: Acoustic Guitar
Lexi Street: Vocals

Trip Around the Moon: ©2005 broad/little                       Appears on: For A Moment
I have always been fascinated that two people could look up at the night sky and
be starring at the same object at the same moment while separated by hundreds of miles.
- I do not remember how this one started. But I do remember the day I wrote the words
and melody. I was able to use music to immortalize some fantastic moments.
The way I sang the words is weird on this one. But listen to the words of the story.
This song empowered me and let me take back some great memories and moments
that I had let go.
Trevon Broad: Vocals, Piano
Kevin Little: Rhythm Guitars
Jody Lundell: Distortion & Lead Guitar
Wade Summerlin: Bass Guitar
And
Chris Hunt: Drums
Rob Ross: Acoustic Guitar
